The Underdue and Baker family have been linked for over 150 years.  Through the research of dedicated family members, we have traced the origins of many of the Underdue and Baker family members to the following individuals:  John Underdue (born abt. 1825) married to Eliza Baker (born abt. 1829).  In addition many of the baker family members can be traced to "Old Polly Baker"
(1820 to 1905). 

John Underdue and Eliza Baker Underdue were married on June 8, 1846 in Halifax County. In the 1860 census, John and Eliza were listed a "free" indivudals.  The census listed the couple as "mulatto".  This marriage appears to be the first union of the Underdue-Baker family.  John was a farmer who owned several hundred acres of land.  Eliza was a homemaker.  The union produced the following the children:

Sons William Underdue born abt. 1845 Benjamin Underdue born abt. 1847 Joe Underdue born abt. 1848 Sam Underdue born abt. 1850 Thomas Underdue born abt. 1859

"Old Polly Baker" was the next-door neighbor to John and Eliza Underdue.  It is suspected that Polly and Eliza were related given that both women had the same last name, however research has yet to show a direct link between the two women. Polly Baker children are as follows:

Daughters Jane Baker born abt. 1841  Amanda Baker born abt. 1850 Susan Baker born abt. 1856  Elizabeth Baker born abt. 1859 Bettie Baker born abt. 1860

Sons  James Baker born abt. 1839 Jesse Baker born abt. 1842 Jimmy Baker born abt. 1843 Augustus Baker born abt. 1845  Wiley Baker born abt. 1851  Sandy Baker born abt. 1852  William Baker born abt. 1853

                              

Many of John and Eliza's children married the children of "Old Polly Baker".  Here is a list of the Underdue/Baker Combinations.

Benjamin Underdue married Mary Eliza Baker (linked to another group of Bakers-Jim Baker And Martha Mills)

The family has linked many of the Underdues to John and Eliza Underdue, however Census records show other Underdues such as Austin and Fannie Underdue from the 1850 census.

The descendants of John and Eliza Underdue have been in communication with other Underdue families that have not yet been linked to John Underdue. These descendants are from Jacob Underdue and Kathy Baker-Underdue. It is suspected that Jacob is possibly the brother of John Underdue—however a connection has not yet been made. Jacob married Kathy Baker; we can probably conclude that Kathy is related to Eliza Baker and Polly Baker. A copy of the Jacob Underdue and Kathy Baker Underdue's family tree will be posted on the website in the near future.

William Underdue (b. 1845) married to Eliza Langord is also another set of descendants that have not been linked to John and Eliza Underdue. Both families are currently working together to make the family connection.
